Who is 50 Cent?
50 Cent, born Curtis James Jackson III on July 6, 1975, is an American rapper, actor, entrepreneur, and investor. He rose to prominence in the early 2000s with his debut album “Get Rich or Die Tryin'” and became one of the most successful and influential rap artists of his time.
Growing up in the South Jamaica neighbourhood of Queens, New York City, 50 Cent experienced a troubled childhood. He turned to drug dealing at an early age but eventually found solace in music. After being signed to Columbia Records in the late 1990s, his debut album faced numerous delays and was eventually shelved, leading to 50 Cent’s departure from the label.
In 2002, 50 Cent released the mixtape “Guess Who’s Back?” which caught the attention of Eminem and Dr. Dre. This led to his signing with Shady Records, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope Records, and the release of his breakthrough album, “Get Rich or Die Tryin'” in 2003. The album achieved massive commercial success, selling over 12 million copies worldwide, and spawned hit singles like “In da Club,” “21 Questions,” and “P.I.M.P.”
Following the success of his debut album, 50 Cent founded his own record label, G-Unit Records, and released the group’s debut album, “Beg for Mercy,” in 2003. He also became involved in various business ventures, including clothing lines (G-Unit Clothing Company), beverage deals (Formula 50 Vitamin water), and video games (50 Cent: Bulletproof).
In the subsequent years, 50 Cent released several more successful albums, including “The Massacre” (2005), “Curtis” (2007), and “Before I Self Destruct” (2009). He is known for his gritty and aggressive lyrical style, often rapping about his experiences in the streets and his rise to fame.
Aside from his music career, 50 Cent has ventured into acting. He made his debut in the semi-autobiographical film “Get Rich or Die Tryin'” in 2005 and has since appeared in movies such as “Righteous Kill” (2008) and “Escape Plan” (2013) alongside Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Over the years, 50 Cent has faced both critical acclaim and controversy. He has won numerous awards, including Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and American Music Awards. However, his image and public persona have sometimes been associated with controversy due to his feuds with other artists, legal issues, and provocative statements.
50 Cent’s impact on the rap industry and popular culture is significant. His unique style, business ventures, and entrepreneurial mindset have solidified his status as a multi-talented artist and a prominent figure in the entertainment industry.
50 Cent last toured Australia in 2018. He embarked on a tour called “Get Rich or Die Tryin’ 15th Anniversary Tour,” which celebrated the 15th anniversary of his debut album. The tour included shows in various cities across Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide.
50 Cent has released several popular songs and albums throughout his career including:
“In da Club” – This 2003 hit single from the album “Get Rich or Die Tryin'” became 50 Cent’s breakthrough song and remains one of his most iconic tracks.
